Current and Previous Interns
Joel Baker
Joel Baker is New Economy’s most recent Research Intern, and joined New Economy in October 2009. Joel worked on a report on Apprenticeship recruitment practices, revealing the expectations, motivations and recommendations of staff, employers and apprentices, involved in the Apprenticeship programme. Joel was also engaged in helping the rest of the New Economy team whenever possible.
Joel graduated in Politics at the University of Edinburgh in 2008. In the months following this Joel worked as a research consultant for Manchester Economics and as a researcher for Creative Educational Press Ltd. Through these roles Joel gained valuable experience in the fields of strategy and policy, working on a number of projects such as the Open Eye gallery funding application and the Stoke Central Business District proposal.
Farai Chipato
Farai joined the Commission for the New Economy in March 2009 for a 3 month placement. Before joining the Commission for the New Economy, Farai studied History and Politics at the University of Liverpool and International Relations at the University of Manchester.
In his role at the Commission for the New Economy, Farai worked extensively on research for a commercial project commissioned by Manchester Airport, as well as helping tp produce material for the Greater Manchester Strategy. He also assisted in the writing of New Economy’s monthly unemployment monitor.
Farai was offered a permanent position at New Economy following his internship, and is now a Trainee Analyst within the research team.
Radu Barburneau
Radu joined New Economy from the Romanian Civil Service, where he works on policy programmes and local development. As an intern at New Economy, Radu worked with a number of colleagues on collating a database of information for the local authorities. He also contributed to development of the Manchester Monitor and the Greater Manchester Strategy.
Radu has returned to the Romanian Civil Service and continues to be involved in policy and development issues.
Marcos Guerreiro
Marcos was New Economy’s first intern, and joined New Economy from the University of Manchester. His background was in advertising and marketing, as well as working for local government in his native Utah. During his 3 months at the Commission, Marcos developed a knowledge base around talent and graduate attraction and retention. This directly fed into Greater Manchester’s talent attraction and retention strategy, and remains a key piece of work influencing the attraction of graduates, entrepreneurs and professionals to Greater Manchester.
Marcos also spent time working with partner organisations, including week-long placements in Bury Council, and working for the Northwest Development Agency.
Since his internship finished, Marcos has returned to the United States and remains in contact with New Economy.
