John Holden - Head of Economic Research

John has extensive research experience across a wide range of economic development themes, including skills, worklessness, and business support. John’s research has formed the basis of numerous major policy documents in Greater Manchester, recent examples include the Manchester Multi-Area Agreement, the GM Sub-Regional Action Plan and the Manchester City Region Development Plan .

Dr Alexander Roy – Head of Research

Dr Alexander Roy - Head of Economic Analysis

Alex leads New Economy’s work on the economic base, international connectivity, science, research, and innovation to inform the development of the Greater Manchester Strategy. Alex’s work is informed by an economic consultancy career within Manchester working for public and private sector clients across the UK and internationally, with a particular specialism in the knowledge economy.

Susan Ford – Head of Publications and Briefings

Susan Ford

Susan is New Economy’s Programme and Policy Manager and leads on publications and briefings. Her role, funded by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA), involves:

  • Supporting New Economy ’s main board and its subgroups;
  • Working with the other AGMA Commissions (Environment, Health, Improvement and Efficiency, Public Protection, Transport, and Housing and Planning) to ensure that the cross commission aspects of delivering the Greater Manchester Strategy are picked-up.
  • encouraging the collaborative working with partners in the delivery of the Greater Manchester Strategy through which is underpinned by the ethos of public service reform.

Hannah Brighton – Senior Analyst, Publications and Briefings

Hannah is New Economy’s Senior Economic Analyst, based in the Strategy Team. Hannah has a wealth of experience in analysing the impact of national and regional policy on Greater Manchester’s economy, institutions and governance structures.

Hannah also provides secretariat support for the Joint Commissioning Board, which was established to oversee the detailed definition of the pilot projects and their delivery.

Mike Doocey – Senior Analyst

Mike was seconded from the AGMA Policy & Research Unit in October 2009. He works on analysis of data mainly for the Economic Strategic Team. Mike’s area of expertise are the Census, deprivation data, GMFM but has experience with many other datasets.

Richard Cook – Senior Economic Analyst

Richard has eight years experience working in economic development. His main responsibilities include production of the Manchester Monitor and Quarterly Economic Outlook (QEO).

Farai Chipato – Economic Analyst

Farai is currently assisting in work on the Greater Manchester Local Economic Assessment. He has worked extensively on research for a commercial project commissioned by Manchester Airport, as well as helping to produce material for the Greater Manchester Strategy and the Bury Economic Strategy. He also assists in the writing of New Economy’s monthly unemployment monitor.

Planning, Housing and Environmental Research

Becca Heron – Head of Planning, Housing and Environmental Research

Becca is responsible for developing and delivering a programme of research to meet the requirements of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) Planning & Housing and Environment Commissions. Current projects include an assessment of demand for employment sites, analysis of the impact of the recession on housing markets and development of a performance framework through which to measure Greater Manchester’s carbon footprint.

Peter Schofield – Senior Analyst

Peter recently joined New Economy’s Planning, Housing and Environment team as a Senior Analyst from AGMA’s Policy and Research team in Wigan.

He is currently leading the update of the Greater Manchester Strategic Housing Market Assessment. Peter continues to be involved with data management and the developing of analysis and IT solutions.
