John Bright: a 200 year anniversary celebration
New Economy in association with Manchester City Council and Radisson Edwardian Hotel Manchester hereby invites you to the 200th anniversary celebration of Mr John Bright; a prominent founder of the Anti Corn Law League, advocate of free trade and champion of the “Manchester School”.
Bright, born in Rochdale on 16 November 1811, became notorious for his radical spirit and outspoken views on the Corn Laws, universal suffrage and British foreign policy. He laid many of the foundations of our modern society.

The event will open with a keynote speech by Bill Cash MP, which will outline the legacy of Bright’s lifetime of achievements. Cash is a family descendant of John Bright and he has written a biography about him – John Bright: Statesman, Orator, Agitator.
The celebration will take place at the Manchester Free Trade Hall (the present site of the Radisson Edwardian Hotel) on Thursday 17th November 2011, beginning at 17.45 for an 18.15 start. To attend this exclusive event, please RSVP to jean.brereton@neweconomymanchester.com by 14th November.

GMEC Diversity Alliance: Repeated Workshop: Disability Confidence Training (Delivered in partnership with JCP)
Council Chamber (Whitworth Building) University of Manchester, Oxford Road M13 9PL
GMEC’s Diversity Alliance provides a cross-sectoral forum for those employers across the whole of GM who are proactively working to diversify their organisations. The forum aims to explore the issues that matter most to members, enabling you to exchange ideas, good practice and challenges around the recruitment, retention and progression of a diverse workforce.
The forum discussions are informed through guidance from employment law specialists including the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), ACAS, and international law firm, Eversheds LLP. Also supported by Jobcentre Plus (JCP), forum meetings aim to help employers achieve their Local Employment Partnership, (LEP) commitments.
Forum meetings are organised thematically, reflecting members’ diversity priorities, current best practice, and the economic climate, incorporating a mixture of presentations, consultancy support and discussion, and providing a unique opportunity for members to network with peers from a wide variety of organisations and sectors. Critical to the success of the forum is that it allows members, both employers and public agencies, to be involved in a learning process that explores new ideas and produces actionable results.
