Manchester innovation brings jobs boost to UK with new national Research and Technology Hub for groundbreaking graphene

New Economy welcomes today’s announcement by the Government of a new £50m Global Research and Technology Hub to commercialise graphene.

In the words of the chancellor, the project will “take the discovery from British laboratories to British factory floors”.

New Economy, the strategic lead for economic growth in Greater Manchester, has been at the forefront of securing this investment for the nation. It is an important development in a tough economic environment and New Economy is now working to ensure the Hub is based in Manchester.

Mike Emmerich, chief executive of New Economy said: “This is a very important day for Manchester and the UK. A year ago our city became the home of a Nobel prize. Today’s announcement marks the start of the next phase of investment, turning graphene into jobs and growth. We’ve succeeded in keeping the research in Britain in the face of stiff international competition. Now my team will do everything in its power to ensure the Hub comes to Manchester, where 80-90% of the graphene research currently takes place.”

Graphene, a Manchester Nobel Prize-winning discovery, has profound scientific reach – being the thinnest and strongest material known to science and conducting electricity better than any other substance.

The Hub would be well placed in Manchester where it would act as a catalyst to spawn new businesses, attract global companies and translate the value of scientific discovery into wealth and job creation for the UK.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: “I warmly welcome this announcement, which is strategically important for the UK. Greater Manchester is the UK’s second largest economy and a key centre for innovation and world class science. Our city of innovation has played a key role in the development of graphene and I believe is best placed to fully maximise its commercial opportunities."

New Economy’s work ensures Manchester’s position as a world class centre for innovation and science is converted into substantial jobs and growth by opening up the commercial opportunities of such innovations and building long term strategic investment.
