BIS Growth Review Framework for Advanced Manufacturing

A response by New Economy on behalf of Greater Manchester

February 2011

Advanced manufacturing is an area in which a lot of hope is placed for economic regeneration within Greater Manchester, particularly in the former industrial areas of the conurbation where manufacturing remains the largest employer. However, the reality of advanced manufacturing in Greater Manchester is not currently well understood.

Because of this, New Economy on behalf of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) is currently undertaking research into Advanced Manufacturing in Greater Manchester as part of the Local Economic Assessment of Greater Manchester. This primary and secondary research study is intended to provide a detailed understanding of advanced manufacturing across Greater Manchester and its implications for economic development strategy.

In this context, Greater Manchester very much welcomes the launch by the Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills and the Chancellor of the Growth Review Framework for Advanced Manufacturing. This short document seeks to answer the main questions posed by the Growth Review on the basis of the working conclusions coming out of our research into Advanced Manufacturing in Greater Manchester, together with the overarching priorities for Greater Manchester as expressed in the Manchester Independent Economic Review (MIER), the resultant Greater Manchester Strategy (GMS), and the recent Local Economic Assessment. It is intended to inform the Growth Review Framework and does not represent an official policy position for AGMA or its constituent Local Authorities.

The response in this paper is provided to inform the Government’s Growth Review Framework for Advanced Manufacturing and does not represent an official policy position for AGMA or its constituent Local Authorities.
