Unemployment Monitor – January 2010

The most recent Unemployment Monitor highlights the continued decreases in JSA claimants and total unemployment, whilst the number of job opportunities decreased across Greater Manchester. The claimant rate fell this month to 80,745 (5.0%), whilst the number of vacancies reported to Jobcentre Plus decreased to 15,836.

The claimant rate, and total unemployment, is falling faster than the UK average, yet long-term claimants are increasing. All indicators point towards the young and job-ready taking advantage of new job opportunities, with those furthest from the labour market (including those that have been on benefits for more than 6 months) continuing to miss out.
